Adam X - My Acidic Being
Adam X has been producing bone-crushing techno and industrial since the early 90s. His militaristic brutality counters the New York techno pioneers' anti-establishment sound. As for Pinkman Records, their influence has stretched across Europe by this point. Reintroducing industrial and punk influences on the electro scene. This team-up seemed destined to be one of the most well-renowned EBM labels out of Rotterdam, finally getting the godfather on their books. My Acidic Being (2023) sees Adam X venturing into the sci-fi fringes of EBM. Using an assortment of radical 808s and the controlled chaos of his signature 303s, Adam X tests listeners' limits with his ferocious brand of extreme electronics.
Adam X flirts with barrages of distorted bass drums that bookend the EP on, 'Laying It On Thick' and 'It Seems Like Yesterday'. The former offers a more fundamental assault of 4/4 kicks and increasingly erratic acid licks. The overbearing bass leaves no room for a breath as sirens blare, creating layers of conflict between the elements. Instruments compete for dominance in the claustrophobic club space. The latter, on the other hand, incorporates more hypnotic vibes into a psychedelic acid-filled spiral. Dubbed-out hats complement the elastic lead lines that culminate in a polyrhythmic ride. 'Trailing Effects' does what it says on the tin. Adam X utilises these luscious reverbs to create a cavernous environment within the record. Mixing that with subtle delays allows the acidic textures to dance freely. Incorporating vocals elevates trailing effects to becoming one of the most memorable cuts on the release. Similar techniques are used on the following track, 'I've Been Here Before'. Adam X subtly incorporates rhythmic dissonance as he elongates the short loop through expert use effects. The track changes considerably from start to finish as gritty acid looks into the fray. 'I've Been Here Before' indulges in the hypnotic sensations similar to 'It Seems Like Yesterday'.
