Aquarian, Hodge - Split 2
The second instalment of the TraTarTrax Split Series sees two of the exciting team up for a one-off "split" record. This time, we have Hodge and Aquarian delivering a jaw-dropping rollercoaster of a record. Aquarium further cements himself as a master of all things underground, seemingly being able to navigate the heavy atmospheric worlds of techno and the hyperactive fanaticism of breakbeat. This time, he pulls all his knowledge into an, at times, chaotic but exhilarating 4x4 party banger with unreal peak time energy. 'Kool Ranch FM' kicks the door down with exquisite rave energy. Phonetic percussive rhythms I helped along by the rocking bassline that growls away underneath an assortment of Hoover's, diva trills, and some proper old-school scratching.
Hodges's effort begins with more UK flavour. The main melody of 'Head Drop' sounds like an amalgamation of old-school garage and grime instrumentals. Of course, it would only be a Hodge track with a medley of syncopated drums adding that funky house groove that the Bristolian has become an expert at. Glitched-out vocals accompany some serious 808 sub-weight as layers of percussive excellence interwoven into a tribal lover's dream and slathered in a bit of UK perspective. It's nice to see some attitude returned to the party, and I expect to see faces furnished and knees bent when either of these two hit the speakers. These are two dance floor weapons: use with caution.
