Cherryphonic - Industrial Collapse
"Fast and noisy" perfectly sums up this release from Cherryphonic. The Spaniard is known for his high-tempo and high-octane music, which he combines with a ridiculous release schedule that sees no less than four releases yearly. Pace seems near and dear to his heart, but don't get it twisted. His latest release on a WHIPBASS titled Industrial Collapse (2024) isn't just a relentless clattering of kicks and bass.
Cherryphonic is obsessed with tension on this record. From its outset, 'Industrial Collapse' batters with the constant onslaught of rhythmic percussion, then subsides to give way to a screeching alarm of impending danger. While hand percussion may only be an aesthetic choice, it has the added benefit of making this danger feel ancestral, like the warnings of ancient scholars that foretold this threat in ancient B.C. are clattering around us. It was jarring to listen to these two tracks one after another. While they both create tension, the imagery created is vastly different. The A-side builds anticipation through its lead sound.
In contrast, the tension on the B-side uses deep bass melodies that are more visceral, conjuring thoughts of an imminent threat. 'Fast & Noisy' uses atmospherics and a lack of resolution in its bass melody to create a sense of unease. As the fight-or-flight response kicks in, sweat evaporates off your skin, filling the air with pheromones and alerting this primal energy to your location. The result is a thrill ride of adrenalin, unmuddied by overproduction, as everything feels free-flowing but tight.
Cherryphonic's top-tier big-room productions work because they sound physical. The highly immersive and aggressive sound keeps listeners on their toes, with bass that bulldozes the chest and chaotic BPMs designed to elicit an uncontrollable response from audiences.
