DJ Trystero - Null-A

EP

Returning for their second outing on The Trilogy Tapes label (TTT) is DJ Trystero, Null-A, released in April 2022. Although it seems not much information is available about this artist, whether it’s done to protect their identity or they want to create some mystery around their releases, it allows the music to speak for itself. It seems Null-A wants to say the most by speaking the least. Null-A is reminiscent of DJ Trystero’s previous release on TTT, as the artist's preferred musical process involves dusting off that old sampler and creating some pleasantly meditative rhythms.

DJ Trystero has a charming style that oozes cool throughout this 12”. The sounds are substantially deep in a natural house-y way that harkens back to the early deep house and adds a dub flavour to the chords.

‘引き金’ is fully locked into the groove, showing hints of Shinichi Atobe’s locked groove house production style. DJ Trystero fixates on small rhythmic loops and adds the most subtle changes that create these lush loops that feel they could go on forever, swelling and shifting ever so slightly, giving us just enough to hold on to, making it a real treat of a ride.

The choice of rattling hats and hissing crashes make ‘想起’ feel super intimate like the microphone is next to the instruments. The track could feel claustrophobic but feel pretty cosy due to the sample choice. The melodic likes add a lot to the intimacy because of how warm the synths are. The notes seem to meander on and off key as they like resulting in this odd viscosity to the whole track.

DJ Trystero explores the dub techno of their sound fully in the well-crafted and slowly driving track ‘範囲’ using a steady kick pattern, the only one on the single. Although dub-techno, in essence, the rolling drums don’t signify a dance thanks to their muffled and top-end-less character but rather a sway, the track feels super laid back.
