Donato Dozzy & Sabla - Crono

EP

This new outing by Donato Dozzy and Sabla Is deep, rich, and dark. To me, Crono feels like a floating miasma that creeps across a desolate plain. The record is chilling and hypnotic mimicking dark clouds drifting to cover the sun. Crono seems very well suited to the Gang Of Ducks imprint stylistically. Crono perfectly falls into that mission statement as they investigate ritual practice in urban cultures.

Whether it be the nasty whispers that circle your head or invite anxious surveillance of your surroundings like in the first track, "Flusso I". Its deep spaces drive forward rhythmically modulating like binaural waves, while its creeping pace is reminiscent of an autumn shower that seemingly brings the world to crawl. The track "Flusso II" creates depth through its cavernous reverbs that ring out and are untampered like that of a colossal gong bath. Getting deeper into the record and with each additional flourish of instrumentation, the reverb tails continue to sink back into that bath of sound that floats at the bottom of the track. There are some undeniably cool elements of this track. The heavy use of repetition, the base that teeters on growling, and the slow progression allow you to sink deeper into it. The total noodlings on "Flusso III" sounds sinister, like otherworldly instruments not signalling some destruction. You have a traditional Eastern vibe to my ear, like a lone player leads a chorus of war drums. The extended runtime on "Flusso III" envelops the track with subtle progressions being introduced periodically. Rounding out the EP "Flusso IV" returns to the idea of a sound bath as the duo introduce a massive Wall of sound that encompasses the listener. They found a way to make it sound soft yet powerful, like a choir. Giant glass bells resonate underneath, filling the low-frequency spectrum with simplistic yet intentional intensity.

It is meditative, with all the tracks being relatively sparse of melody, in exchange for repeated mantra-esque rhythmic elements. Due to this, the whole record is more spiritual; the artist wants to hold your attention through subtlety. If you're a fan of Donato Dozzy or Sabla already, I can't imagine you won't be a fan of this. Crono is profound electronic music that invites you to take a second and soak it all in.
