Dorisburg - Voices
Bringing back the deep house and techno sounds from Gotenburg after taking a short hiatus from releases, Aniara Recordings returns in 2023 with a trippy tech-house-inspired EP from label regular Dorisburg. As customary in all Dorisburg tracks, the atmospheres are top-notch, dub siren-like sustains, dotted delays coming from every angle and subdued melodies that sit quietly under the dynamic drums only to be allowed to surface infrequently.
Focusing on the more melodic side of minimalism in this outing, Voices (2023) allows the Swedish artist to experiment with slight deviations from the norm. Because of the slight change in style on ‘Voices’, the track can feel stagnant in parts and relies on the talent in structure, modulation, and mood creation Dorisburg possesses to re-energise it. I think the melodies run flat and don’t lend themselves to this minimal style, slightly missing the mark for me. Still, creating lush and densely packed sonic environments via the melody reminds me why Droisburg is an exceptionally gifted artist. Continually evolving with the incorporation of subtle modulation within the delays and reverbs. ‘Voices’ has a swirling sound bed of the angelic sounds of a celestial choir created from expert manipulation of audio effect tails on said melodies. This choir compliments the more synthetic lead lines, evidently when Dorisburg uses filters to submerge lead beneath the ocean of ambience.
‘Skulptur 7’ finds its home in the more tripped-out minimal scene as Dorisburg takes influence from dub techno. The track created is a blend of groove, and pure meditation moves further through. The track seems to open and swallow us whole. Dorisburg takes a deep dive into groove composition, not relying on any one trick to move a dancefloor. The combination of locked-in kicks and toms accented with splashing hi-hats is killer and allows for the rich textures that circulate to act like fleeting thoughts as you try to clear your mind. The vocal sample is super memorable, and not only is it looped, but that looping is what will put you into such a trance-like state. Out of the two, ‘Skulptur 7’ has more of a fleshed-out identity, carving out a niche as a trippy club track, while ‘Voices’ excels as a clear push in a new direction for the artist and one I hope is refined just a touch in the future.
