Emily Jeanne - Blue Dawn / Ao Sen
Abstracting aggression in very different ways, the new release by Emily Jeanne is one to watch. The new two-track belter Blue Dawn / Ao Sen (2023), released on Peder Mannerfelt Produktion, toes an oh-so-difficult line between unbridled hostility in sound design and the more nuanced approach of world-building within music. Emily Jeanne signifies a sort of violence without resorting to pure brutalism within her work. On the one hand, 'Blue Dawn' finds tranquilly, a calm before the storm, in a ritualistic aggression. Long deep, drawn-out horns of war cover the record in this thick smog of anticipation. There's heavy tension throughout 'Blue Dawn', with the only thing cutting through being tribal percussion. 'Ao Sen' takes an alternate approach focusing more on the internal effects of witnessing 'Blue Dawn' as deep bases and harrowing atmospheres are central to bombard this dark, brooding mood. Slick gloopy textures, reminiscent of 140bpm music, travel down the spine like shooting nervous twitches. Jeanne utilises a slow chilling sub-bass that cascades between two-step rhythms that crash to a halt with every whip-crack of a snare. Filters add subtle movement and add dynamic interest to the minimal composition. Vocals play like recurring nightmares, internal voices imploring you to run. Ritualism and introspection come to the forefront on both cuts as Emily Jeanne abstains from using conventional melodies, instead burying them within more percussive elements creating a ghostly talking drum effect.
