Eris Drew - I Can Move Move
Eris Drew has had one of the best arguments for being the queen of club culture for several years. It's down stunning albums accompanied by a roster of hardcore singles, a music taste to die for full of eclectic dance floor weapons and her unwavering ability on the decks. You're hard-pressed to find someone who disagrees, especially if they've been lucky enough to be in transit in one of her sets. She spins transcendent house tracks full of euphoric melodies and bass. The latest release from Miss Drew sees the high priestess of the Motherbeat explore more experimental and diverse sounds with I Can Move Move on the Slump Recordings imprint. I Can Move Move gets the remix treatment by both the founder of Slump Recordings, Baby Rollén and Gallegos, for some more clubby and acidic flavours.
Eris Drew's I Can Move Move is much more rugged than the club-friendly house she is typically into. This time, it's more to the point, with crunchy kick drums shaking the speakers from the first beat. The vocal stylings of Divas have always been an iconic part of Drew's song-making, so of course, that comes back in full force with a new sense of power heard through the samples. This new stripped-back aesthetic from Eris Drew sounded poised for something else. Luckily, something else came in the form of the lead that sounds more like a fritzing circular saw that, once unleashed, slides between percussive or more electronic. What's most surprising, even more so than the strip-back sound we're hearing on this release, is that Eris Drew's rendition, although the original, maybe the weakest of the bunch.
The two remixes feel leaps and bounds above Eris Drew's more experimental version. Baby Rollén goes all in on the club aesthetic by tightening the bassline and laying down a slew of syncopated snare rolls. Not only that, but Baby Rollén uses those same vocals to create a sense of depth that is missing from the original. There's a lovely blend of acidity to both remixes. Baby Rollén keeps it at lemon juice while Gallegos cranks up the pH. Gallegos coats his track in a good layer of reverb and delays to make those acid licks pop on top of these super emotional pads and key stabs that end up creating this sort of sundown euphoria that sits somewhere between Tinman and Ghetto House.
