Fabio Monesi - Devotion
Fabio Monesi brings the joy back to house music whenever he takes centre stage on his imprint, the cult classic Wilson Records. Fabio's latest dusty outing, Devotion (2023), plays perfectly into his wheelhouse of gritty, to-the-point club tracks that really start a party. His relationship with Craigie Knowes, Crème Organization and L.I.E.S. should tell you all you need to know about his sound. Fabio Monesi's raw DIY aesthetic is on full display. The saturated stomping of kicks and claps harken back to the classic house days in the best way.
Devotion begins with a wild 70’s electronic reinterpretation of the 90's French filter house. The track's title, "You Are Not Supposed To Know," echoes over a radical saw bass reminiscent of Italo disco. The vocals cower behind the minimalist house beat until Monesi cranks that cut-off, raining down crisp vocal chops, shimmering funk guitar, and that oh-so-sweet MS-20 style bass magic. With the title track 'Devotion', I can’t entirely separate the R&B vibe from this one. It could be the chopped chords or the slower tempo. Whatever it is, it just works. Monesi brings an understated heat to the table. Sensual melodies and jittering hats float over a tight, offbeat bass. The breakdowns on this cut are the stars of the show, fizzing rides given out to fuzzing chords. Powerful house, both deep and soulful or epic filtered warehouse music.
