Giant Swan - Fantasy Food
Giant Swan is back for their first release in 2023, kicking off the year with their unique brand of fast-passed crisp industrial techno. Fantasy Food continues to bring their chaotic vocal samples to some of the cleanest productions that still fit in an industrial banner allowing the full range of audio effects to morph and stretch the vocals into atmospheres, percussion and whatever else the duo desire.
The title track, Fantasy Food, is a much more glitchy affair, heavy and lumbering bass weight movements accompany the almost acidic glitch motif that plays across the shorter-than-expected 2:14 runtime. Without drums', ‘Fantasy Food’ would be a break at the midpoint if it weren’t for such an oppressive yet barren sound design and perfect atmosphere.
‘Boasting’ utilizes a lovely call-and-response pattern in the bass, keeping the relatively stationary beat rolling on. Still, in true-to-form Giant Swan fashion, they use mastery of spacy effects to keep the listener engaged, firing off laser beams where needed.
‘Sugar and Air’ alongside ‘RRR+1’ stands out from other genre productions due to the duo's use of a clean vocal atop the track acting as the lead. The vocal is not burdened by audio effects for the most part and plays a rather simplistic pattern is one of the elements that seem freshest to the genre. ‘Sugar and Air’ used the striking breathy element atop the heavy 4x4 beat, keeping the interest by using arrangement techniques such as the drawn-out midway breakdown and changing of details while keeping the track cohesive and were introduced to the vocal breaks expertly used by Giant Swan on this project. On ‘RRR+1’, this odd yet pleasing motif aside, there is a meticulously crafted ravey track full of all the raunchy fast-paced action you’d expect. The kick cuts through, the off-beat bass rumbles along, and the ear candy swirls like moths around the light of your periphery.
The whomping basses on ‘Abacuses’ are accented beautifully by the relatively sparse beat, and nonregular vocal fills pinpoint this as a proper warehouse floor filler.
