Hainbach - Shenzhen Rain Showers
It's not a stretch to call Hainbach one of the most influential voices in modern experimental music. His informative YouTube videos catalogue his journey with Soviet-era scientific equipment and discontinued drum machines, synthesisers, and weird electronics. Already a talented composer for theatre, Hainbach has been able to translate his avant-garde musical style into the most mind-bending electronic experimental music. After hundreds of videos and countless self-releases, Hainbach has found his niche. His latest project, Shenzhen Rain Showers (2024), comes courtesy of Seil Records.
Hainbach creates mesmeric worlds that transport the listener into dreamlike, tranquil environments. A Hainbach tune is always so interesting as it incorporates many experimental elements. The foundation of Shenzhen Rain Showers is built on a drone of electrical hum. Saturated pads add bliss, fluffiness, and warble to the production. Listening to the sparse piano reminds you that Hainbach is an expert at less being more. The whole piece is vibrant and alive with swelling movements. Even screeching motors add character and texture. Of course, it's ambient, but it's not music for airports and doesn't try to be. Shenzhen Rain Showers is meant to be felt. The piece is like looking out the window on a rainy day; while the world is still, there's still so much movement. Droplets fall, and animals scurry for shelter. It's an allegory for stillness; there's a subtle beauty to watching the world pass you by.
