Hizatron & Bashley - Discharge EP

EP

The combination of superbly crafted electrical bass tones that vibrate the body and esoteric samples make the ‘Discharge EP’ by Hizatron & Bashley well worth the 30,000 volts about to be shot into your spine. In addition, the release of 2012 showcases excellent naming that fits so well with the feel of a record, demonstrating both an ability to craft slick electrical textures and the presence of mind to draw attention to it.

Hizatron & Bashley present an intense 3 track EP that displays both restraint and a comedic edge. The duo combines thick raw basslines with percussion that pops and fizzes like static, sliding over tempos conjuring images of wires meeting, the surge and spark of electricity becoming the three tracks were treated to. Hizatron & Bashley had a clear club focus with this release combining the unique wonky percussive production style and full-fat bass with punchy kicks that cut right through the mix.

The bassline flows between poppy static, tickling the senses, to full-blown amped-up excitement, guaranteed to melt systems and minds alike. Throughout the EP, the duo uses filter manipulation and a few other sneaky tricks to induce the feeling of arc lightning catapulting you across the dance floor like bad CGI from an 80s movie. No more prominent place is this evident than within the title track ‘Discharge’, the inclusion of additional frequency sweeps rattle behind the prominent throbbing bass as if it’s an 80’s guitar solo whaling out of control resembling the ghost in the machine trying to break out.

The final track on the EP ‘Coat Angah’ uses the duo’s adept percussive stylings to allow for a more chilled affair. While the pads lull us side to side, it’s hard to ignore that pulsating bassline, controlled to perfection, augmented and modulated with such care as to both drives and give a gentle bounce to the whole track like a choppy wave, the last place you’d want to be with this amount of high voltage energy. We also find sections of ’Coat Angah’ to have intense analogue sound manipulation, seemingly to remind you that there’s always danger around the corner from these two.

The standout for me is ‘Baggah Peeds’ for its commitment to the driving, modulating bass that’s relentless in its amperage. ‘Baggah Peeds’ embodies electricity, the aim I feel Hizatron & Bashley were trying to achieve. Compared to the other tracks, the unpredictable feeling of the modulation and the simplistic drum programming are about energy, the pure transition of electrical power to the dancefloor.
