JakoJako - Verve EP

EP

JakoJako has a grasp most can only hope for when regarding techno as an art form. It seems the Berlin native walks a tightrope between the dancefloor banger and the most authentic artistic expression. For those familiar with JakoJako's work, it should come as no surprise when you hear the latest batch of innovative and experimental ideas. JakoJako Is currently applying this artistic trade to Mute Records in the form of the new Verve EP (2023), channelling free-flowing minimalism through fluid atmospheres and angelic pads.

The first track, 'Impetus', is a fine example of these converging textures as JakoJako uses the most subtle modulation in sound to evolve each cut on the EP. Progressive evolution keeps the interest as subtle poly metrics percussion transforms into trance laser beam stabs fit for any down-and-dirty raucous event, effectively flipping the record on its head. JakoJako's mastery of sub-bass becomes evident whether it be the fluid-based conduit that contrasts ecstatically clicking percussion on the track 'Opak', which uses a thick layer of developing ambience over the whole cut to melt the two parts together or the uncontained sub groove on 'Auris' that seems to challenge the typical bass conventions. Customarily used to ground the other brain-bending elements that evolve independently, warping, shifting, and interfering with each other, 'Auris' complements the quirks it works with. Rhythmically challenging and perfect for peak time. The Verve EP is born from the German art of minimalism yet manages to toe the line between "big room" and meditative. 'Nexus' embodies that approach through the mantra of less is more. Subtle vocal chops fade in and out as static hangs in the periphery. Slight electronic whispers hide behind more forceful elements as JakoJako's restraint in consideration shows itself to be top-notch. JakoJako's contributions to the scene are evolving, almost as much as the music, and it's a combination of timeless German techno elements being contorted and altered in new and exciting ways that make JakoJako such an exciting artist to hear.
