LAU - DDE05

EP

One of the most impressive things about LUA is the pure introspection she brings to the listening experience. It's a richly textured, colourful wash of synthesisers, yet the way the reverb and delay interact means you almost feel like you're dancing alone in a warehouse as the sound check is happening. LAU propels you into this "dance like no one's watching" mentality. Laura Tóth (LAU) has made a splash on the Dalmata Daniel imprint this year as it will be the Hungarian-based producer's first solo release under the alias LAU, and it's not one to miss. DDE05 (2023) is an action-packed battle between beauty and efficiency, making it perfect for peak-time sets. This record has great energy, fun, fast and free, making it the ideal party hit.

Warmth undercuts every single note of this EP. It's a bear hug of acceptance that brings together attitudes from the inception of disco and house. 'Mort Subite' plays these glossy arpeggios that float against the backdrop of throbbing bass vibration. 'Lip-Sized Bites' is the most overtly EBM-leaning, yet LAU still manages to stamp personality into the framework with subtle nods to Italo-Disco and Electro. Distance sci-fi sirens intertwine with bubbling acid lines that speak to a more hardcore club feel. 'Freak it all night' hits hard with melting bass rhythms ground in the track, all the while vocals call across the dancefloor, "Get closer baby. We're going to freak it all night!" saturated in audio effects, they become playful, softly suggesting while becoming a perfect hook to anchor the cut. There's no doubt this record is full of passion and aims to express that feeling of club love and undeniable attraction to the like-minded people within. Finishing on a transcendent note, 'Sea Of Distance' is bittersweet. The huge synth pads play angelic chords that underpin the most subdued offering on the record. That's not to say it's a departure from the rest by any stretch of the imagination. It verges on the trancey side with a small club attitude but incorporates the Balearic flair allowing it to be super versatile.
