L.F.T. - Hollow Head

After gaining notoriety from a string of EP's and singles, L.F.T. indeed introduced themselves with the release of Blood in the Grass on Osàre! Editions in 2020, developing their sound into a second album, this time on Mannequin Records, Salz (2021). The German artist combined electro and industrial sounds slathering on an undeniable punk aesthetic. In 2023, L.F.T. returns with the most exciting release in their discography, Hollow Head (2023). A dark and dissonant foray into a dystopian atmosphere edging on power electronics.

Hollow Head, released on Mannequin Records, adds a conceptual aspect to the rambunctious sound of L.F.T., switching gears and delving further into the distorted underground. Hollow Head is a raucous outing showcasing belligerent drum programming drenched in distortion, analogue flares, and whining synthesisers replacing screaming guitars and guttural vocal shrieks topped off with glorious acidic licks. Rolling basslines separated this record from modern electro so eloquently, coupled with wild modulation, L.T.F. creates an incredibly visceral experience as demonstrated out the gate with 'I Want To Be A Witch'. Monotone vocals drenched in delay are the day's agenda as 'No More Tears' creates an oppressive feeling like Big Brother is watching, furthering a creeping feeling of dystopian dread. 'Hörst Du Das?' opts keeps things simple aside from chaotic drum fills and an ever-present undercurrent of analogue fuzz. Wobbling synths add a haunting quality to tracks like 'Panzer Tranz' while 'Voodoo Dues' injects Middle Eastern melodies over top of the phasing atmosphere. Rounding out the record is The Hacker's remix of Panzer Tranz. Taking the original and creating a new context, explosive kick drums and a powerful droning bassline to solidify its warehouse readiness.

There's an entrenched emptiness to the record, helped partly by the obscured vocals heard throughout as delay is used to create instances of space. At times it can sound otherworldly and others oppressive. Transcending just electronic music, Hollow Head exhibits an artistic nuance That would sit comfortably within the grungy basement club or more metropolitan establishments. It's the music of the people for the people.
