Mike Dehnert - Berlin Rush

Fachwerk label head and all-round Berlin mainstay Mike Dehnert joins MATTER+ with a beautiful summation of his signature style. Berlin Rush (2024) is a laid-back but not lackadaisical take on minimal techno. From the off, Dehnert explores alternative grooves and sample selection in 'Shadow York'. The pulsating beats are given a futuristic flair through meandering drones and augmented vocals.

Dehnert is known for his forays into dub while keeping his raw analogue sound intact, and that's precisely what the title track provides. The clangy and metallic call-and-response dub techno of 'Berlin Rush' may not translate on a less powerful rig, most likely as it is not over-saturated with fluff. Instead, it is sparse and clubby, perfect for mixing in those Funktion-One-clad small rooms.

The tumbling bass on the 'Isotope' opens new avenues for dance. Its wonky nature is playful. The cut feels wistful as it attempts to draw experimentation out of the audience. Dehnert is an experienced clubber who knows that the pseudo-serious floor fillers won't cut the mustard with the laid-back crowd. Berlin Rush is a record for grooving, so leave your stomping boots at the door.
