Mr. G - Getting’ somewhere? EP
The legendary looper, Mr. G, returns to his imprint, Phoenix G, with one of his most techy releases in recent times. The Gettin' Somewhere? EP finds its niche by omitting wild synthesisers and massive drops, allowing the classic G sound to remain. Mr. G's carefully crafted dance music is subtle and emblematic of patient dancefloor meditation. On the opener, 'Dust in the system: Tokyo dubplate', Mr. G's calculated approach is fully displayed. Master of Minimalism invites you to enjoy the slowly evolving house beats as baselines and ride cymbals are slowly feathered into the mix before being dropped right back out. G implants the track with a quiet vocal that sounds somewhere between crowd noise and something to pay attention to. Mr. G imparts an old-school house feeling throughout the record, especially when the archetypal organ chords begin to blast over the vinyl crackle-soaked samples.
Exercising his range, Mr. G's 'Let's Do It…' is a fantastic techno revival track that flows between rattling 303s, rolling samples and insatiable dub chords. Country to most of his output under this alias, 'Let's Do It…' sounds totally alien and synthetic as Mr. G relies more on synthesisers than samples. His samples are noisy and cut short, adding to that in human character. In another departure from the classic Mr. G sound, the closer 'Find Love - Ambient Space Tek' is a drifty ambient exploration that calls back to The Fifth Chakra (Ambient Space Tek) album from 2024. Mr. G combines distant vocals and cascading piano with an ultra-minimalist melody that will surely envelop anyone willing to sit with it.
