Mr. G - Some Dutty Beatz
Now, this is one for the real deep house heads. The G is back. For those uninitiated in the House of G, he is a veteran of the funk. His wicked style oozes from each track, and his latest release, Some Dutty Beatz (2024), embellished with that signature G, brings soul and groove differently than you may have heard before. When considering Deep House, most people consider Kenny Larkin to be the grandfather, the architect and the originator. While his tunes use basslines and chords to create emotive atmospheres, Mr. G sometimes takes a different approach. While an English native can put together a thrilling Larkin-style cut, its slowly unfolding tracks invite the listener to sit with the groove gradually seeping into their bones. Patient listeners are rewarded through his signature repetition with tiny changes all the time.
Some Dutty Beatz is a wickedly poetic collection of three tracks beginning with 'Love Appetite G's Out Dub', which introduced the synthetic soul of early Detroit techno without venturing too far into tech house territory. Less is more with G as 'Love Appetite G's Out Dub' slowly evolves while staying immersive and engaging. Futuristic bloops, a delicious groove held on those high hats, and these slowly encroaching strings. Oh, and, of course, the iconic sample cuts that always become instant earworms. Next, we're hit with a cosy house number, 'When Ya Bad…'. Dubbed-out chord stabs are G's weapon of choice, exercising discretion and allowing a bit of space for a vocal sample you won't see coming. In classic G style, it feels homely. It has gospel and lounge music elements subverted by killer super saws straight out of the acid rave days, pumping the track full of energy. 'Same ole sound' is the most in-your-face cut, clattering in a hyperspeed. This last track shows his range, going from a deliberately methodical dance track meant to hypnotise to a straight-up assault with classic house elements. It must be said he may be the best sample selector. As I said before, his samples become instant hits in my eyes, and with the course "Don't you know it's just the same old sound, yeah," belting through your speakers, you can't help but dance.
