Mule Driver - We Don’t Exist
Harel Schreiber has been cranking out music under his alias, Mule Driver, since 2006. His collaborative project with Itamar Weiner, The Models, has been getting more attention since the inception of their Confused Machines imprint, first at the scene around 2015. Under Mule Driver, Schreiber has sought to perfect this glacial electronic music, slow-paced and minimal. Part techno, part electro, but slowed down for a more considered approach. The latest release, We Don't Exist (2023) by Mule Driver, on his Confused Machines label, has evolved to incorporate more tranquil acidic qualities.
Mule Driver delivers a staunch, gravelly EP full of crunchy drums and psychedelic acid lines. The title track 'We Don't Exist' is on a void's edge. A litany of juxtaposed crackling and irregular drums anchors the cut while 303s drift over the abyss. The creative use of claps grounds the rhythmic pulse of wayward synthesisers. Exchanging the cavernous void for something much more intimate on the B side, 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner'. Deep thumps keep the beat while a rolling bass takes centre stage. Brutish and guttural croaks roll over the whole tune while phasing percussion regulates the pulse. The mood is tranquil. You can float along the groove while mind-expanding acid dances above.
