Ovatow - The Negativity That Surrounds Me
The Negativity That Surrounds Me (2023) is the newest release from Frustrated Funk head honcho Ovatow. The new 12" comes to us courtesy of Harbour City Sorrow, a sublabel of the legendary Frustrated Funk. It consists of two dub-infused electro numbers that will captivate fans of both genres. The 10-minute epic 'Frustrations Dub' leans heavily into its dub roots. The track is densely packed with an enthralling atmosphere. Ovatow Shows a clear love for roots dub music, evidenced by the chord stabs on the offbeat. Delays wash over endlessly, caked in a subtle saturation, bringing warmth to an otherwise desolate-sounding cut. 'Frustrations Dub' cultivates an aesthetic close to a city at midnight. Low-level vinyl crackles and snappy hats act like rain droplets bouncing off the pavement. The tracks flow together beautifully, with 'Visitation v_4' sounding almost like a continuation of the first. 'Visitation v_4' it's way more suited for the dance floor. The boom of the 808s creates unstable footing as they shake the speaker cones. That same desolation can be heard throughout this cut, but it's got a much sharper tone. Razor-sharp hi-hats complement whip-cracking snares. Needless to say, Ovatow has outdone himself on this record. The blender of dub and electro is a match made in the damp Rotterdam streets. It's cold, It's dark, it's wet. Perfect for those looking for a deeper sound.
