Pole - Tempus Remixes

EP

In 2022, Pole released Tempus, his third on the legendary Mute Records. The Berlin electronic music powerhouse Stefan Betke has been producing music under Pole for a while now, amassing plaudits over several albums and juggling running a record label (Pole) and the Scape Mastering studio. Jumping forward to 2023, the Tempus Remixes EP has dropped again on Mute. The release stretches Pole's original work through the punk, techno, and ambient genres, with the likes of the Sleaford Mods, Rrose and Alessandro Cortini all being asked to participate, not to mention a cheeky new version of 'Stechmück' by the man himself.

The Sleaford Mods drop one of their darkest beats within this remix before splatting on Andrew Fearn's awkward squelchy bass and bouncing stabs, over which comes the characteristically off-kilter vocal styling of Jason Williamson. Pole's original edition of 'Stechmück' did capture distinct early dubstep influences, but this new version condenses those ideas. This latest version could be seen as a King Tubby dub. Everything's got a bit more punch depth and delay that makes those furious revving of f1 cars scream through the gears and sound like they are hightailing it through city streets. Rrose turns those same motorised sounds into distant swarms of insects. The track is packed with roars and belches, staying true to Rrose's twisted style and continuing a tradition of making haunting and organic electronic music. Alessandro Cortini slows the jam right down. He grounds the groove with decisive yet powerful percussion. Cortinis's experimental style flourishes as the track unfolds with gaping organ samples and a wicked left-right combo of rolling bass and melody that is pulled kicking and screaming into the foreground.
