Shimpei Watanabe - Yoro Falls

Retrofitting the classic house sounds to the more polished and dynamic modern day has always been an incredibly desirable sound. From the wild, distorted, acidic fluorosis that creeps into contemporary bass music to just recapturing the heyday of the weird and wonderful warehouse party, those early refined sounds capture people. Shimpei Watanabe delivers a much more polished and focused Chicago Sound, dancing the tightrope between classic 80s groove and more current sounds.

'Gorilla Biscuits or Cookies' kicks you in the clavicle with percussive rim shots that inject energy. Nevertheless, it's Watanabe's use of modern production techniques that sets it above. Nods to acid, excellent structuring and a slowly descending bassline bring some much-needed flair to the A-side of this peak-time record. Flipping things over to something much more celestial, 'Owl's Mambo' embodies something more fun and free, with a zealous use of catchy hooks and melodies throughout. Soft pads build in intensity before shimmering away, revealing a dizzying xylophone and some springy acid licks. Wrap all that up in rock-solid beats to flood the dance floor, and you've got a proper dance track. Expect to be hearing this from multiple house heads looking to inject a bit of weighty whimsy.
