Tapan feat. Decha - Twenty
Tapan has become synonymous with the Belgrade music scene, being part of the furniture since 1994. The eclectic style of sample-based chuggers has been lauded and emulated countless times, with no one quite coming close to the pure hypnotism the group has perfected. The unconventional slow tempos excite audiences, and industry veterans like Vladimir Ivkovic often push that ambling sound. The 2022 venture titled Twenty (2022) featuring the maestro Decha is a psychedelic trip containing four distinct moods. The namesake should be familiar to anyone who knows Tapan's back catalogue. The slow tempo and the pulsating bass create a perpetual motion that keeps giving. Swelling synths and unorthodox metallic percussion set the track firmly between dreamy and edgy. Decha's vocals, dubbed out almost beyond recognition, delve fully into the trip. The 'Full Circle Remix' lightens things considerably. What was once a chaotic fuzz of swirling synthesising and low-end power is tamed, and what's left is a mellow electronica exercise. This relaxed vibe only lasts briefly as 'Rebolledo's 2021 Positive Thinking Remix' turns things to 11. The tempo skyrockets (at least in comparison to most Tapan tunes), and there's more emphasis on the industrial edge of the percussion. Instead of hypnotic psychedelia, it's infectious groove and rhythm. Closing on the record is one of the strongest entries, 'Tapan's Beatless Version'. In this case, it does more than just what it says on the tin. The beatless version is rather transcendent. Its thick textured base pulsates away while washes of sound, vocals and synthesises echo endlessly. The 9-minute epic draws you in, melts your brain, and spits you back out.
