Vril - Animist
I am incredibly excited to talk about the new single, ‘Animist’, the title track of the new album of the same name set for release on Delsin Records on 03 March 2023. Vril is an artist I’ve admired for some time, though not been lucky enough to see them live yet. Animist follows beautifully from Anima Mundi, the first release in 2017 on the famously allusive Giegling imprint, which was later re-released on Delsin Records in 2018. Returning to solo work after collaborating with Rødhåd on their Out Of Place Artifacts project, Vril slips right back into the sounds they’re famous for.
Honing in on simple yet effective melodic progressions that cut deep into the soul, Vril uses a single bass tone that ascends to shroud the music with a melancholic sadness that practically solidifies time. A swad of tundral wind in the form of evolving glistening frosty pads whisp around the track, creating a weightlessness that sometimes feels ethereal.
Vril captures a deeply optimistic feeling within the dub techno genre, and ‘Animist’ is no different. Stabs dance over the track saturated in audio effects like delay to create width and strange artefacts in a narrow track band, expanding and contracting like breaths. Vril uses ping-pong delays to create sonic caldrons that bubble away under the track's main elements as evolving textures.
‘Animist’ is the ideal mid-set track. Its electric halftime kick pattern works excellently as a break but leaves a DJ enough of a riser due to its melodic elements that sweep upwards, growing gorgeously with each passing kick. Each bar seems to swell into the next as Vril treats the audience to a tension fuelled masterwork.
