Benjamin Damage - Light

Benjamin Damage’s latest release on Cocoon Recordings Compilation U (2023) sees him join a host of dance music legends, including Ian Pooley, Space Dimension Controller, and Levon Vincent. The beauty of ‘Light’ was revealed to me in the back of a taxi at a lower-than-normal volume. The uncanny way Benjamin Damage blends emotion into any track he sets his fingers on is unreal. We’re used to seeing Benjamin Damage put his talents to techno, incorporating beautiful melodic pads and leads straight as delicate as starlight. Although not versed in liquid D’n’B, Benjamin Damage captures a sound at the crossroads between electro and breaks.

‘Light’ is a futuristic depiction of love. The track flies at hyper speed. Guttural growls populate the low end, counteracting the dreamy plucks that feather the high end. The bittersweet relationship that Benjamin Damage explores is the central motif that pulls the track together. The bass emotes deep pain while aggressive fury is expressed through breaks. The melodies pepper in a sense of hazy joy that elevates the cut. Damage avoids producing just another club track and transforms ‘Light’ into a vibrant tapestry of breaky break-up goodness.
