Feral - Mind Garden
With each full moon comes a new release from the famed Swedish deep techno label Hypnus Records. Founder Michel Iseneld weaves occultist lore into the label with this irregular release pattern, yet it fits so well. This full moon brought Feral out of the shadows for the ninth appearance on Hypnus with Mind Garden (2024). Feral uses clinical production, deep pulsating kicks and vibrating sub-oscillation that sounds almost alien to give the release an uncanny but familiar vibe. Feral knits syncopated psytrance details into the first track, 'Elipse', which brings an uncharacteristic "hands in the air" attitude. Still, it's expertly tempered by thick atmospheres and relative sparseness, making this synthesiser feel lonely. The title track, 'Mind Garden', takes a more cosmic approach. Lush strings add a truly cinematic feeling to the mix, while housey percussion patterns keep the light and bouncy. Both tracks are highly reflective, relying on atmosphere and space to elicit a somewhat isolated feeling.
