Filmmaker - Death Lessons
Faunes Efe, otherwise known as Filmmaker, has been unmatched in the sheer volume of output over the last few years as he creeps closer and closer to having countless self-release works, each as filthy as the last. Distortion and fuzz take centre stage in the Colombian's work with lashings of stylised EBM punk and techno are Filmmaker's bread and butter. Supreme creativity is displayed to churn out so many records while keeping such a distinct voice. However, the latest outing by the Colombian maestro, Death Lessons, released in 2023 on Lifeforms, takes Filmmakers distinctive gritty style and applies it to three opposing tracks styles.
Riff-centric rhythms are probably the best way to describe Filmmaker’s music, and 'Outermost' kicks off Death Lessons by displaying a heavy, no-nonsense raw style. Muck is slathered on this punk powerhouse as it emulates the pure electric currents used to make it. Cycling through percussion patterns and overdubbing the thrilling hooks on top creates a simple yet thick and textured cut. Eerie pads wade in from the depths, adding apocalyptic angst to the record. 'Bitting Void' is straight out of the pits of the underground with nods to power electronics, industrial and punk. Cataclysmic kick drums pound a halftime rhythm, and noisy hoover melodies keep the pace. 'Bitting Void' is all about the vocals. They don't just set the mood but become integral to the sound. Visceral and atmospheric, the gut-wrenching screams are mixed to compliment the melodies, ringing of fear and pain. The way Filmmaker incorporates these elements into his work cuts deep into the EBM back catalogue, an evident influence to this day.
The digital exclusive 'Pineal Dust' is a Krautrock-inspired wrecking ball. Filmmaker injects so much energetic fury into this final track that it seems intent on causing a riot. Revving engines and rock'n'roll seem like a far shout from the Electro-infused works of Faunes Efe, yet take a closer listen, and you see the two intertwined—punky krautrock, distilled and perfected by Filmmaker. Squealing Stratocasters reverberate in the background, adding a familiar sound to the atmosphere to which you won't help but air guitar.
