Galcher Lustwerk - Black Power Electronics
The Brooklyn-born bad-boy, Galcher Lustwerk, has been killing the American underground music scene for years. He has prominent releases under iconic labels such as Ghostly International, White Material, and his very own Lustwerk Music, where most of his funked-out house rhythms reside. Having a keen ear for spoken word lyricism and an entrenched understanding of black American culture, Galcher Lustwerk is an absolute machine regarding Afro-American electronic fusion. For example, his latest work, Black Power Electronics (2023), is a smooth fusion of black American staples such as Jazz, Blues, and Rap, all in a rhythmic whirlwind of house and techno.
The EP begins with 'Black Power Electronics', harnessing dynamic drums to lay the foundation for a bluesy retrospective on electronic music. Reference is critical to Lustwerk's nostalgic take on electronics, black attitudes and cultural understanding in his music through undeniable nods to the electronic pioneers from Chicago. Rhythms are expanded upon with lashings of delay and reverb, pushing the track into the realms of soulful IDM. The second cut leans more to the East, taking inspiration from the black electronic music powerhouse, Detroit. 'Mirror & Table' throws down with attitude and confidence. A heavier offering expertly combes jazz's melodic stylings and amps it up to 11 with brutally rigid techno kicks. The baritone vocals return in classic Lustwerk fashion, channelling power and sexuality into funky spoken word. Black Power Electronics can be seen as an EP of two halves, the first being introspective considered and soulful, the second hitting home with funk, ferocity and a swagger in its step.
