Gigi Testa - Jinja
As the sun starts to shine, and cravings for that summer romp begin to creep in, for that record that keeps spinning all summer long, the one that fills the dance floor with joy whenever it comes on. Gigi Testa's Jinja (2023), Initially released in 2022 on a white label under Rush Hour Records, is quickly becoming that record. It could be circumstantial that the sun starts to shine every time it's put on. Its rhythms and melodies are infectious, and its groove is undeniable. The Italian producer's blend of funk, disco and house music is parcelled in a tropical package, perfect for the festival or just enjoying the rays. Gigi is clearly influenced by 808 State, and the nods to 'Pacific State' bring a sense of nostalgia to the party. Gigi captures that same fun and the summer excitement found in those 90's Balearic house records and brings them into a modern context.
The acidic basslines of the title track 'Jinja' will grab you from its first note. The seaside sounds are underlying but ever-present, as sounds of gulls can be heard here and there. Wailing synth solos appear all over 'Jinja', adding levity and a relaxed feel to this summer record. 'Malinke' ups the ante with the beautiful use of steel drums, paying homage to the people of West Africa. There's a beautiful melding of cultures and genres throughout this release which speaks to Gigi's extensive discography under labels such as World Peace Music. Listen for the sing-along section towards the second half of 'Malinke'. Little touches like that truly cement the record as the sound of the summer.
Rounding out the EP, 'Echoes In The Sky' Turns the energy down a notch as Gigi imparts a more soulful house style to this cut. Psychedelic synth floats over the warm embrace of a rich bassline, around which the record shows clear intention. This is best put on as the sun starts to dim. The heavy 80s influence on this one emphasises this late-night quality as a rare synth-pop cut: part Knight Rider, part classic house groover.
