Stojche - Granada

EP

The new release from Stojche, Granada (2023) is a chunky blend of the old-school Detroit sound, think Robin Hood but with fewer samples and more dub. Releasing on Syncophone, Granada joins a long list of genuine house and techno heroes, such as Theo Parrish, Zadig, and Fred P, who have previously graced the Syncophone grooves. Stojche's SYNCRO39 follows a tradition of excellence.

On the A-side, Stojche hits us with futuristic sci-fi sounds complimenting the rounded low-end percussion that continuously drives the track forward. Breathy stabs accentuate the bounce of the cut, providing a hip-shaking element until they take a backseat to the chaotic Jeff mills inspired percussion introduced towards the second half. And all that without even mentioning the riffy Tropical house plucks littered all over the track, which adds a feeling of heat. Despite all the influences Stojche references in this release, they've managed to keep it sounding fresh. This could be partly down to the excitement it gives when you first hear it or all the subtle flares of melody that are largely uncommon in this rhythm-focused genre.

The flipside should be addressed, as Convextion unravels a much headier interpretation of the source material. Convextion replaces the melodic sequences exchanging them for drawn-out pads and polyrhythmic percussion. As a result, you'll be treated to incredibly straightforward kick and h-hat patterns complemented by this out-there percussion. It's been a long time since I've heard percussion like that. The differences between the A and B sides are stark enough to make two halves of the same whole.
