Helena Hauff - Multiply Your Absurdities
Helena Hauff's Multiply Your Absurdities release on the boundless Tresor Records feels different from the projects and albums that have come before. She's turned the corner, engaging with music and focusing more on the dancefloor. Most will know Hauff as one of the most iconic, ear-catching and uncompromising deejays operating within the techno and electro-adjacent spaces. One of her best attributes is an unwavering sense of self and a fantastic comprehension of what works on the dance floor. In this day and age, Hauff is a bit of a rarity being "just the DJ", an ever-expanding musical landscape of marketing and promotion where you can be lost to the wayside if you don't produce your own records.
Her latest Multiply Your Absurdities feels like an amalgamation of years playing parties, digging for sonic gold, and becoming more familiar with what works on some of the most varied stages, huge venues or tiny clubs. 'Multiply My Absurdities' is a tranquil yet gritty opener, which allows its melodies and rhythms to intertwine so effortlessly. Solum pads that rest in the background contrasted with the assertive baseline. Helena's peak time compatibility comes through during 'Punks In The Gym' as she shows more brush and rhythmic side still in production. This warehouse music is closer to an industrial rave than the melodic techno of the record's opener. The darkness persists while faint sirens give a sense of scale, lending the track to larger spaces. The final track, 'Humanoid Fruit', is a hypnotic blend of acidic screeches and distant growls that cement is the standout on the record. Hauff sandwiches underground techno's strange and esoteric sounds with industrial music's raw power and relentlessness. While all the tracks have acidic distortion weaved into every fibre of themselves, 'Humanoid Fruit' takes the cake and gorges itself, making me believe that this will be a cult classic in no time.
