Sasha GiGi, JADED & Surya Sen - Coins (Extended)
It can get disheartening how serious dance music takes itself these days. It could be the rise of techno super clubs, or after the dance music boom and then the 90s and early 2000s, people naturally gravitated to something with more substance. There has been a strong march towards "proper dance music" and a subcultural shift in hunting for something less poppy. I look back on artists like Groovejet and Utah Saints with nostalgia because at least those artists put energy into their releases. Instantly, you could tell that they would be a hit even if, on occasion, they weren't the most cerebral. The dance floor would rumble with excited feet, ready to move to catchy choruses and groovy baselines.
Sasha GiGi, JADED & Surya Sen's latest single on Higher Ground, taps into that unserious fun that the dance floors have been craving for a while. The trio must assemble a techy Electro-house stepper with super catchy rap lyrics with pop appeal. Coin (Extended) (2025) isn’t too far from those pop club rap hits served up by Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and Tinie Tempah. The lyrical content isn't anywhere near the standards of those three. Still, Coins features much more accomplished dance music credentials in exchange. Don't get me wrong, even with the coin sound effects, this is far from a pure gimmick. The production is super solid with more wobbles and growls than you can shake a stick at, not to mention the brainworm of catchphrase that'll be swilling around your head for the next month or so. They even slow the track and speed back up in the breakdown. Why isn't everyone doing this already? Sasha GiGi, JADED & Surya Sen bring silly fun back to dance music.
