Louis The 4th - Tar17
Tar Electronics’ sub-label, TH Tar Hallow, has been pumping out release after release at a frightening speed. After discovering Lenson’s Tar14, which shared many of the same identifiers as their latest release, Louis The 4th’s Tar17 (2023). Gritty, raw, hard-hitting techno. It makes sense that their sights are set on the big room and their heritage coming from the decorated Rotterdam scene having a very reminiscent sound, Bas Mooy’s Audio Assault label, all killer, no filler.
Intensity hits lofty heights out of the gates as Louis the 4th combines the unrelenting percussive power of 00’s techno with modern techniques. Coy chord stabs add droplets of musicality into the churning tornado ‘Va De Soi’. While ‘Tolo’ sinks deeper into the darkness of the big room. Energetic bass and haunting atmospherics shape the mood into a dissociative trance. Looping rhythms rip through the entrancement like a wave of adrenaline.
Jackhammering low end remains consistent over the breadth of ‘Declined’ as Louis the 4th plays with the 4-bar loop, compressing and expanding each element, creating social change. ‘Declined’ is an exercise on simplicity, hats and shakers trade places, creating exciting interplays. Vocal synthesis brings the final track, ‘Kassl’, to life. The vocalisations dance towards the back of the track, almost acting as an adlib. Louis the 4th keeps up the dizzying pace, introducing bells and crisp hats. These tracks are fit for purpose barrelling out the speaker box. Being able to do a job on the big stage at peak time is no easy feat, but Louis the 4th manages to crank out four that do just that.
