Raucous occult ritualism, just in time for the spooky season. The duo harnessed developed textures while atmospherics took centre stage on the latest TRULE release, FLAW (2023). The powerhouse partnership between Priori and Al Wootton conjures up visions of witchcraft and sorcery. Themes of isolation, darkness and fear are all present throughout the EP as Priori and Al Wootton flex the musical world-building. Tribal takes on techno show unwillingness to allow rest bite with continuous streams of tension.
Strong marsh vibes kick us off. The duo leans into their uncanny ability to create depth. Each kick drum sounds like it's bubbling up to the surface of a great black lagoon on 'The Bell With The Wooden Tongue'. Echoing sounds of toads and other amphibians surround its periphery. This track encompasses a ruthless trip. A tentative sense of unease floats ominously from one track to the next. 'Leniency' takes us deep into the forest's depths as darkness envelopes everything. Campfire is a distant memory. Out of nowhere, the unshakeable rhythm starts. Faint to begin with, but it spikes. Tension reaches boiling point with the handclaps. Out-of-body experiences ensue. The perfect blend of effects makes the club so hypnotic. Couple that with distant croaks and chimes, and you have a psychedelic club hit.
Bridging into the realms of D'n'B, Priori and Al Wootton flip genre conventions on their head in this dark and chaotic venture. The duo keep sounds textured, adding a naturalistic element and grounding the track in uncomfortable realism. That is until the gargantuan foghorn bass. 'Seclusion' takes on new life. It becomes the soundtrack of a desperate escape from something indescribable. Priori and Al Wootton end with a proper roller. The psychoactive effects of the duo's unconventional synthetic rhythms bolster already intense sound design. Airy pads act like mist blowing throughout the forest floor. The duo strikes a delicate balance between what you hear and feel. Kick drums beat while the spectres of percussion float translucent under the misty atmospherics.
