Not Waving & Romance - She Sings, But We Are Silent

It looks like exciting times for Ecstatic Recordings. A new Not Waving and Romance release may be on the cards after She Sings, But We Are Silent (2024) hits streaming services and a new unclickable album cover on the Ecstatic Recordings website. While both artists haven't been quiet by any stretch of the imagination, the last time we saw the duo together was Eyes of Fate (2021). That album was a moving meditation that captured the repressed believer in me. This time, it seems to be more of the sweet same. Glacial drones that stretch farther than the eye can see. As if to attempt to soundtrack the celestial bodies moving in the solar system, the duo have linked any ability to depict the beauty of the natural world in such slow-evolving detail. The duo excels in encapsulating the human element in these massive phenomena, especially in this latest release

They bring in coral whispers, which urges you to think of much more religious iconography. The vocals are at home beneath softly swinging church bells. Not Waving and Romance extract them from that context and elevate them to new heights. Not to prattle on about the religious imagery, but I think that's what they're going for, a sort of "man was made in God's image" type thing. What's impressive is it's always been very angelic when these two get together. This isn't exactly exciting music, but that's the intention. They intend to evoke an elevated feeling and will do just that. When listening to She Sings, But We Are Silent, it feels as though you could be, at any moment, lifted from the ground and ascend upwards. I would much rather listen to this on a Sunday than songs of praise.

Keep your eyes peeled for a physical copy of this one, hopefully soon on Bandcamp.
