Pearson Sound - Hornet
With each year, Pearson Sound is getting more creative, carving out an experimental niche between the fringes of breakbeat, garage and jungle music. The latest blockbuster release, Hornet (2024), sees the Hessle Audio founder slide further into that uncanny valley between genres. 'Hornet' is explosive. Crisp production quality is a lovely counterpoint against the more old-school rough and ready sounds he aims to emulate on the cut. Elements of hip-hop sample wizardry grab the top end. At the same time, bombastic 808 basses grapple the lows straight out of the jungle classics of old. 'Hornet' now holds the crown for my favourite snare in dance music, the previous being Felix K's Recognition (2010)—the dry slap of the snares combos with a classic scratching sample. 'Hornet' is full of outside-the-box thinking and fearless creativity that will make every producer envy it. The woozy, intoxicated lead line will stay with you long after the tracks end. It feels as though you're being dragged into a drunken disorder, clamouring to sober up while in the middle of a packed dance floor. Person Sound again shows his chops for creating club-focused mega hits that radiate style.
