PLUS ONE – Wonder / Llamada Romantica
Soft and euphoric garage groove from the Irish producer that's been amassing a considered collection of releases that takes inspiration from the heavyweights of the 2-step scene. Only The PLUS ONE second release on Dublin's own, First Second Label, and he already gets a cat number: PLUS001. Matt Finegan encapsulates catchy, carefree club sensations from the 90s and 00s and beyond under his PLUS ONE moniker. Snappy hi-hats and snares skip over rhythmic bass riffs. Both 'Wonder' and 'Llamada Romantics' bring nostalgia with some classic pitched vocals. The former aims to be the summer's feel-good sound as Finegan makes a bouncy speed garage. A seriously stunning build slap bang in the centre adds to that nostalgia, with PLUS ONE bringing back timeless house chords and contemporary glitches. The latter throws dark sub-wobbles under some seriously swung drums. Taking lessons at the school of El-b, 'Llamada Romantica' pays homage to the UK's underground heritage. It's a true steppa, subtle and nasty, built with layers of seductive sound design. It is a dark groove taking inspiration from the days of 138 on the atmospheric side of the genre. The tracks are just screaming for a system.
