Poly Chain - RELAX

EP

Poly Chains RELAX EP released on Funclab (2023), a sublime blend of punchy angular Electro with a softer and more rounded emotional centre. These two clashing ideals conjure up Ghost In The Shell (1995), and other sci-fi works dealing with the duality of man and machine. Within Poly Chain's RELAX, we have these unrelenting kick drum patterns either used in robotic 4/4 or used to create these powerful machine funks licks attacking like jackhammers. 'You' strikes head-on with unbroken combinations of popping percussion to knock you off balance. Continued flurries of sampled percussion add to the intensity of the track.

'Can't' mixes the sonic elements of a decrepit power plant, blown fuses, ark lightning, and the hiss of electrified water. Poly Chain keeps upbeat energy to the track through a Dynamic springy bassline adding that level of duality again to something that should be so dark and industrial. Throughout the record, the bass tracks rumble this sinister contempt hidden just under the surface. ‘Have’ situates itself as the most aggressive on the record. The unrelenting drum funk, slashing hats and splintering percussion pierce the mix with precision and venom. But the rolling baseline and the dissonant lead lines set the track apart.

There's a naturalistic beauty to the synthesised lines. The synthesisers' rubbery plucks and springy twins aim to invite feelings across the emotional spectrum. 'What You Truly Desire' deviates from conventions such as aggressive industrial Electro. We're treated to a wash of cosmic synthesised arpeggios. The synthesises sound almost aquatic as they flow between the wild percussive elements of each track.
