Polygonia - Tales of the Nocturnal Sky
Tales Of The Nocturnal Sky (2023) sit deeply between the crossroads of trippy fever dream and organic body music. Polygonia throws caution to the wind with a rich use of circular rhythms and bombastic synthesised voices. The effect is a wholly hypnotic journey through an immensely atmospheric rainforest. Released on Monument Records, Tales Of The Nocturnal Sky hits a sweet spot between having dominant dance floor fillers and something more profound. The record begins beautifully with reverberant textures cemented firmly in the latter of the two camps. There is a theme or motif of water in the track 'Nightfall' as many sounds on this cut emulate that of droplets, streams, or waterfalls. Polygonia imbues the whole of the record with this same ecological spirituality by designing sounds and rhythms that mimic the calls of birds of paradise.
'Star Reflections' encapsulate its namesake with polyrhythmic squeaks and whistles that float gracefully over the pulsating kick and bassline patterns and, in many ways, act in microcosm for what Polygonia brings to the table with this new release. Sounds organic, almost animalistic, that interact with each other like the tree-top chorus of the jungle. While 'Meteor Storm' stands out and will grab the most attention as an unrelenting kaleidoscope of rhythmic intrigue and abstract synthesis. Polygonia seamlessly merges the repetitive march of techno's deeper aspects with a naturalistic and organic wobbling synthesiser that seems to bend and contort at its whim. 'Celestial Night Rites' looks spiritually inwards as the ever-present yet evolving arpeggio acts more like a mantra or raga that repeats with a slight yet continued variation. Polygonia imbues the track with continuous movement. LFOs push and pull different elements and different frequencies of those elements in contrast in directions creating a swirling, hypnotic tune designed to get lost within. It feels as though you can probe deeper and deeper into 'Celestial Night Rites' grooves.
