Stef Mendesidis - Crocodile’s Grin
The Greek phenom Stef Mendesidis has a back catalogue spanning some of the most prominent and well-renowned labels in all of the techno, including Klockworks in the Clergy, so Vault Sessions made a wise choice when picking Mendesidis to launch that new label, Vault Records. The physicality Mendesidis weaves into their production is astounding, with ‘Crocodile’s Grin’ being no exception. Gut-punching kicks and rattling lows force movement on the dance floor while razor-sharp hi-hat adds layers of undeniable groove. Jumping straight in, ‘The Suspect Zone’ feels like the theme tune to the Bermuda Triangle. Dulcet lullabies with a mysterious tone floating overhead, contrasting the controlled clattering of the percussive loops and heavily pulsating bass that anchors the track. The title track, ‘Crocodiles Grin’, is an acid workout rearing for club use. Tight loops and great use of rhythm bring a natural swing to the record. Subtle variation within the 303 pattern keeps the momentum flowing, adding enough twists and turns to keep the cut exciting. A brutalist ox kick smashes the speakers when ‘Kraken’ hits. Crushing waves of unforgiving drums batter as the foghorn warning comes far too late. The ships are already taking on water, and there is no escape. Sink away with the finale, ‘Nisha’, as bubbling textures take over. Gorgeous drifting synths add a lovely melodic complexity and have a mind of their own, freely migrating between notes.
