Tubby Isiah - Crumble the City / Enter Chamber
Tubby Isiah is the Bristol-based father and son duo that has been peppering the roots community with releases since 2019. The latest endeavour, Crumble the City / Enter Chamber (2023), brings two tracks of breezy bass heat to warm you this winter. Tubby Isiah brings flavour to modern dub music while pushing for an authentic sound and releasing the single on a 7-inch dubplate, doubling down on the appreciation of the old school.
Filled to the brim with ferocious bass weight, this is sound system music. So much so that it almost feels disrespectful to attempt the experience any other way. Thankfully, the rich saturation squeezes every last resonant frequency out of that bassline, meaning you get a surprising sense of power even at low volumes. Dub vocals and little flourishes of delayed magic create mood and depth. The darkness of 'Crumble the City' is accentuated by filtered chord stabs that give way to a chorus of horns that erupt out of nowhere like a ray of sunshine over an overcast Bristolian morning. The duo continues by sprinkling lashings of swagger to 'Enter Chamber'. The hi-hat groove swings into each snare as dub echoes drift endlessly into the either as ample snare pop adds groove, conducting audiences to sway like rippling oceans. Using modern production techniques to push the music even further into the realms of mysticism. Endless tape echoes glide weightlessly over the organic rumbles, creating some proper dub steppa's.
