Anthony Linell - Sheltering Skies

The Northern Electronics head honcho is back, delving into more of the early hypnotic sound plait fans with remember. After a series of mind-bending ambient works showcasing a more varied and considered side of Anthony Linell's artistic expression, we're hit this time with a much more rhythmic and thrilling record. Linell's Sheltering Skies (2023) focuses on the deep techno sound that made Northern Electronics well known. A malaise of grotesque synthesised sounds carve out incredible bass grooves resulting in a plethora of twisted alien and robotics vocal performances that morph and twist around powerful percussion.

The three-track EP, Sheltering Skies, changes analogue sound waves into something far more otherworldly. Each track on the EP adopts its own cadence evoking thoughts of alien conversations between species. 'Illusion Self' is supercharged by electrostatic energy bubbling under the surface, unveiling a litany of rave-inspired stabs perfect for progressive dance music's eyes-closed, head-down style. While 'Sky Crash Over Me' uses more angular robotic sawing synths designed to shake the floor. Resonant sweeps flow over the track, creating spikes of laser beam percussion culminating in the dissipating of drums into a myriad of hunting whispers. 'Just To Feel Anything' is the deepest and most ominous of the trio as Linell slams the high frequencies leaving this low-end groove rhythmically pulsating. The rest of the cut comprises haunting atmospherics and angular percussion patterns made-up of mangle hats and claps replicating and intensifying the low-end groove.

The most enigmatic productions of Linell have cemented them as one of the leading voices in Scandinavian techno as the producer continues to push boundaries while keeping true to a signature style. But, of course, being an active label head will always bring pressure. It is your job to spearhead the label's sound, yet it seems, especially with this release, that Linell isn't just up to the challenge but thriving.
