Donato Dozzy - Magda

Rarely does an artist come along who can blend such different genres and make one cohesive whole. A bastion of the deep techno scene, Donato Dozzy's grasp of the techno and ambient genres is unmatched. His tracks are lush and trippy atmospheric journeys where Dozzy wades through dense mist and fog. They leave lasting impressions on anyone who hears them. Donato Dozzy's brand of psychedelic music draws from the same ideology as the originators in the 1967 Summer of Love. Psychedelic music has always had an entrenched relationship with nature, from Woodstock in the 60s to more contemporary works like Plantasia. With a connection back to the natural world growing in popularity with more emphasis on sustainability and being out in nature, if it's just for the aesthetics, I'm looking at you, gorp-core.

Donate Dozzy slides into this 60s mentality as the tracks' Magda' and 'Le Chaser' feel so grounder. Within 'Magda', you can hear nature's intricacies, birds tweeting, the babbling brook just out of sight, rustling in the trees, whereas 'Le Chaser' captures the feeling of these events, the warmth of the light shining through the trees, curiosity and that shiver when hearing tranquillity for the first time. These two cuts capture the feel of crisp, chilly air circulating in your lungs while your heart palpates faster. The clear skies emerge over the crag as the heart swells, overwhelmed. But Dozzy is also able to tap into the more cosmic side too. Velluto channels, imagining the vastness of space for the first time. The delicate twinkling feels heavenly as the track modulates like the nebula's colours shifting over countless years.

The second half of the album takes a vastly different approach, using audio to illicit trancey hypnosis. Waves of synthesised atmospherics wash over as the steady repetition of Dozzy's percussion allows you to get fully absorbed into his underwater world on 'Franca', whereas 'Santa Cunegonda' is a syncopated chugger that comes straight from the house of Ivkovic and Willikens, topped off with that signature Dozzy ambience. Donato Dozzy's elastic last track, 'Lucrezia', glows with lush swathes of graceful pads, rubbery drums and a vibrating bassline that quickly becomes intoxicating. Dozzy Uses audio FX and repetition to craft audio hallucinations intended to lure you further into the trip.
