Sciahri - Strange Infatuation
Sciahri's experiments with texture have earned releases with some of the scene's heavy hitters, including Opal Tapes, Semantica, Mord, and Non-series, to name a few. Since his 2014 debut on Ilian Tape, Sciahri has slowly honed his organic and infectious sound with each record. Synths grow like fungi spreading over the forest floor, redistributing rhythm and melody as a by-product. Tracks flow from one moment to another as they continuously mutate. Sciahri's most recent release on Monument Records, Strange Infatuation (2024), is bold and ear-catching, with a distinct natural sound. Hollow and woody textures dominate the pallet.
'Magnetism' takes this concept up a notch using spacious reverbs to sell that massive sound like the entire track is inside a Redwood hollowed out from a lightning strike. While fundamentally quite simple, 'Stone' is built from layers of texture that slowly envelop the rhythms. Growing like moss, creeping over the whole track, and ultimately submerged under a thick layer of rhythmic atmosphere. The standout is 'Temptation', which is undeniably visceral. Galloping kicks copy a heartbeat with synthesised electric zaps racing throughout the body. 'Dance of Knives' doubles up everything on 'Temptation'. Sciahri picks up the pace and doubles up on percussion, adding more stimulation. The electrical impulses triple. 'Dance of Knives' is a perfect closer that crosses the boundaries between experimental electronica and peak-time deep techno.
