OFF / Grid - Strobe Light Memories
OFF / Grid cup to the kaleidoscopic vision of nights gone by, delivering five outstanding dub techno tracks on one of the most pivotal labels of the past few years, Arts Collective. OFF / Grid style consists of tight, peak time locked grooves perfect for club use.
'Strobe Light Memories' and 'Insomniac' come closest to eliciting those dance floor memories. Both careen into existence with brutal peak-time energy. Massively distorted kicks slap flesh and rumble bones as OFF / Grid comes out the gates swinging. Dusty dub chords bring these tracks to life. The saturated warmth to the stabs brings infectious caustic heat to both tracks, like standing under the beer garden heater until your scalp starts to tingle. The delays on 'Insomniac' in particular make the flow of this cut unparalleled. Swells and stereo magic make the groove pop. You take it fast or slow. It's up to you.
Whereas 'Patterned Vision' and 'No Need To Talk' are there to make high-octane memories. Dense textures are made by the fierce percussive loops and accentuated by the ebb and flow of energy as each track breaks down and builds up, sure to get a more raucous response from the crowd on 'Patterned vision'. Throwing in shouts and yells, along with a heap of hand percussion, gives the track an old-school tribal techno flavour. Swampy acid and dark vocals round out the record with 'No Need to Talk'. Designed for getting stuck in, head down and again caught up in the loop. Simplicity is the greatest weapon for 'No Need to Talk', as it burrows into the subconscious, repeating long after leaving the club.
