Kinzua - Purest State Confusion

Kinzua’s Purest State Confusion (2024) hits hard, becoming one of the most club-focused releases on the Osàre! Editions catalogue. The record is super energetic and even antsy at times. The title track, ‘Purest State Confusion’, is an atmospherics stepper beginning the record. Disembodied groans add spooky wait to the donking bassline that feels more like 2010s house music than drum and bass, but it works impressively well. The duo piles on the metallic clangs all over the record, especially ‘Rio d’Oro’, which operates in halftime with wild percussion pushing it faster and faster.

The intro for Disappearer gears up to be the heaviest jungle track on this side of the Amazon, and it doesn’t disappoint. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not flush with snares rides and hi-hats, but there is more bass than you can shake a stick at, and its nonconformity means you can screw your face and keep hold of your red stripe. Kinzua takes the junglist vibes up a notch with ‘Channeling Bryn Jones’. It’s a richly textured tribal cut that comes full force with hand percussion over a proper rolling sub.

The duo does a great job of locking things into a dark and moody atmosphere. ‘Andreas Grotesk’ is a perfect example, with its ever-climbing risers that dissipate into a dance floor creeper of dubbed-out vocals and distant one-shots. The Happy End to the album contrasts the rest of the record and lives up to its whimsical name. Bubbling bells fill the track with deep, purposeful 808-style kicks that explode on the next street. ‘Brain Massage’ is a blissful end to one of the label’s most full-throttle releases to date.
