Ruman - Memories of Being Lost Vol.2
It's hard to describe, but dub techno has always had an uncanny ability to be deep and vibrant simultaneously. Filtered chords and stabs are given so much dimension by delays ping-ponging endlessly at times. Not to mention the entrancing, steadiness of rhythm and deep sub-bass’s push and pull dancers effortlessly. One of the best modern examples of this can be found on the latest Sungate record by Ruman entitled Memories of Being Lost Vol.2, released in 2024. The Spanish artist brings a blend of the different corners that open the dub tech spectrum together, from the soulful stabs of 'Stone Tower' and 'It's Better Here Than Outside' that don't rest on their laurels but expand and contract, becoming reminiscent of glossy Basic Channel tunes at their bleakest. The dark minimalism of ‘Wangsta’ invites introspection as the head-down dirt creeps over the dancefloor. The chuggiest on the record is its opener 'Gas'. It's slow and methodical like a locomotive pulling away from the station while being downright deep. The closer 'Giant Baby' is in stock contrasts with high-octane rhythmic wizardry, focusing more on sub-movement than the other cuts on the record. Ruman has compiled a record that explores dub techno's outer edges while paying homage to The Pioneers and contemporary sounds. There's something for everyone on Memories of Being Lost Vol.2.
